Israel Moves to Close Al Jazeera Office in Jerusalem

Netanyahu's Threats Realized, Sparks Criticism

Jerusalem, Israel - Israel has moved to close the local office of Al Jazeera, the influential Qatari-based news network. The decision, which has been met with widespread international criticism, follows years of tension between the Israeli government and the network.

In 2017, then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to shut down Al Jazeera's Jerusalem office, accusing the network of supporting terrorism. In 2018, an Israeli missile destroyed Al Jazeera's offices in Gaza. The network has also faced legal challenges in Israel, with some officials accusing it of violating local laws.

The Israeli government has not yet provided a specific reason for the closure. However, critics say the move is part of a broader crackdown on press freedom in Israel.
